Close Up Bull

December 4, 2010

October 2010

David Thomas of North Carolina took this big bull on the first day of our second rifle elk hunt.  When New Mexico’s elk rut winds down, the big bulls will leave the cows and become solitary or buddy up with other bulls that they’d recently battled with.

David’s bull had such a partner and they were by themselves.  We had just tied up the horses to walk into a proven elk meadow.  After a few steps this bull appeared in the middle of the trail.  David collected his trophy at 3o yards!  The second bull was bedded a short ways away and at the gunshot he headed for safer country.

Great job David!
